Underbust Corset vs Overbust Corset: Which One Should You Buy?

he whole underbust corset vs overbust corset question comes down to a few inches of fabric. One stops under the bust. The other carries on over it. That sounds like a styling detail, and it isn't. Those inches change how hard the corset is to fit, what you can wear it with, how freely you can breathe and what you'll pay.
Our short answer, if you're in a hurry: buy an underbust first. It's easier to get right, and you'll wear it more. An overbust is the better buy in two cases, and we'll get to both.
Underbust vs overbust corset
Underbust corset | Overbust corset | |
|---|---|---|
Covers | Ribs, waist and upper hips | Bust, ribs, waist and upper hips |
Bust support | None; wear your own bra | Built in, so no bra needed |
Worn | Over a shirt or dress, or under clothes | On its own, as a top |
Fitting | Easier: waist and ribs do most of the work | Harder: the bust has to fit as well |
Movement and breathing | Freer | More restricted |
Hides under clothes | Fairly well | Poorly |
Price | Lower | Higher |
Good first corset? | Yes | Only if you know your measurements well |
What is an underbust corset?
An underbust corset starts just below the bust and ends at the top of the hips. It wraps your ribs and waist and leaves your chest alone.
Because there's nothing over the bust, it never works as a top by itself. It goes over something, usually a shirt or a dress, or it hides underneath. Your bra stays your own business. That's the main reason people find them easy to live with.
Both of our corsets are this type. There's a ready-sized leather underbust corset in S to XXL, and a made-to-measure pink leather underbust corset that we cut to your own numbers.
What is an overbust corset?
An overbust does everything an underbust does and then keeps going. It rises over the bust, usually to about underarm height, and finishes at the hips. The cups, or the shaped panels where cups would be, hold the bust from below.
So it's a complete top. No bra, no shirt, nothing else needed. That's why you see overbusts at weddings, on stage and at formal events, where the corset is the outfit and not an extra layer on it.
Underbust vs overbust corset: the differences that matter
Fit and sizing
This is the big one, and it's where most people go wrong.
An underbust has to fit two places well: your ribs and your waist. An overbust has to fit those and your bust, and busts vary far more than waists do. Two women with the same waist can be several cup sizes apart, and a standard-size overbust can only be cut for one of them.
Corset reviewer Lucy Corsetry gives a useful rule of thumb: if your bust is more than about 10 inches bigger than your laced-in waist, an off-the-peg overbust probably won't fit. At that point you're looking at made to measure.
Bust support
An underbust gives you none. You wear whatever bra you like with it, or no bra at all.
An overbust lifts the bust from underneath, so the weight comes off your shoulders. If you have a heavy bust and bra straps that dig in, that can be a real relief. It's the first of the two cases where we'd say go overbust.
Comfort, movement and breathing
Underbust, comfortably. It stops lower on the ribcage, so your chest can still expand when you breathe in. You can bend, reach and sit through a long dinner.
An overbust holds more of you still. Some people like that feeling. But there's very little give across the chest, and a deep breath has nowhere to go. For a few hours at an event, fine. For a whole day, most people will want the underbust.
Styling
Think of the underbust as a belt with ambitions. It sits over a white shirt, a slip dress, a T-shirt, a blazer, and changes the shape of all of them. One corset, a lot of outfits.
The overbust is the outfit. Add a skirt or trousers and you're dressed. It's the more dramatic of the two, and the less flexible, because it looks the same every time. That's the second case for buying one: you want a statement top for a wedding, a stage or a night out.
Wearing one under clothes? Only the underbust really works. An overbust shows through anything fitted.
Price
Overbusts cost more, and it isn't a mark-up. There's more material in them, the bones and the front fastening are longer, and the bust takes extra time to shape and sew. In leather, where the hide is the expensive part, that gap gets wider.
In leather
Most of what you read online assumes a cotton or satin corset. Leather behaves differently in one way that matters here: it barely stretches.
A fabric corset can forgive a slightly wrong size. Leather won't. On an underbust, that's manageable, because you only need the waist and ribs right. On an overbust, it means the bust has to be right as well, to the centimetre. If you want an overbust in leather, have it made to your measurements.
Which should you choose?
Go underbust if this is your first corset, if you want to wear it with clothes you already own, or if you'll have it on for more than a couple of hours at a time. It's also the safer choice when you're buying a standard size online and can't try it on.
Go overbust if you want the corset to be the whole top, or if you want the bust support. Just be honest with yourself about fit. If your shape is far from a standard size chart, order it made to measure or don't order it.
Plenty of people end up with both. Start with the underbust.
How to measure for each one
Use a soft tape over bare skin or a thin top, and keep it snug without pulling.
For an underbust, you need four numbers:
Underbust. Round the ribcage, directly under the bust.
Waist. The narrowest part of your torso.
High hip. Round the top of your hip bones.
Torso length. Sitting down, from underbust to lap.
For an overbust, take the same four and add two more:
Full bust. Round the fullest part, wearing the kind of bra you'd normally wear.
Bust to waist. Straight down from the fullest part of the bust to your waistline.
Don't skip the sitting measurement. A corset that's too long will dig into your thighs every time you sit down, and no amount of loosening fixes that.
A word on wearing either safely
A corset should feel like a firm hug. If it pinches, if your ribs ache or if you can't take a full breath, loosen it. New leather is stiff, so wear it for an hour or two at first and let it shape to you.
You'll see corsets sold on promises about posture and back pain. We don't make those promises. If you're pregnant or have a health condition, ask your doctor before you wear one.
FAQs
What is the difference between an underbust and an overbust corset?
Coverage. An underbust corset starts below the bust and covers the ribs and waist. An overbust corset also covers and supports the bust, so it can be worn as a top by itself. That difference makes the overbust harder to fit and more expensive.
Is an underbust or overbust corset better for beginners?
An underbust. It only has to fit your ribs and waist, so standard sizes work for far more people. It's also cheaper, easier to move in, and goes with clothes you already have. Try an overbust once you know your measurements and what you like.
Do you wear a bra with an underbust corset?
Yes, if you'd normally wear one. An underbust gives no bust support at all, so most people wear their usual bra with it. Pick one with a smooth band, because the top edge of the corset sits right against it.
Do you need a bra with an overbust corset?
No. A well-fitted overbust holds the bust from below and does the job of a bra. If you find you need one underneath for support, the corset doesn't fit you properly in the bust.
Which is better for a large bust?
It depends on what you want. An overbust takes the weight off your shoulders, which many people with a heavy bust prefer. It's also the hardest to fit off the peg. An underbust with a good bra is the simpler route, and a made-to-measure overbust is the better one.
Can you wear an underbust corset under clothes?
Yes, far more easily than an overbust. It hides best under looser tops, jackets and dresses with some structure. Leather is thicker than cotton or mesh, though, so a leather underbust will show under anything thin or tight. Most people wear leather on the outside.
Why are overbust corsets more expensive?
They take more of everything. There's more material, the bones and the front fastening are longer, and the bust has to be shaped and sewn with care. That extra work costs more in any fabric, and most of all in leather.
