Most pony play harnesses sold online are faux leather with plated fittings, built to a generic size chart and priced accordingly. This one is made differently.
Every harness is cut from full-grain cowhide, the outermost layer of the hide with the natural grain left uncorrected. It is the densest and strongest part of the skin, which is why it holds tension without stretching out of shape and develops a patina over years of wear rather than cracking at the fold points. Each piece is hand-cut, assembled and finished in our workshop, then quality-checked before dispatch.
Why Full-Grain Cowhide Matters in a Harness
A harness is not a decorative accessory. The straps carry tension, get buckled and unbuckled repeatedly, and sit against body heat for hours at a time. That combination finds the weak point in cheap leather quickly.
Full-grain is the highest grade available. Because nothing has been sanded away from the surface, the tight fibre structure of the grain stays intact, and that is what gives the leather its strength. Lower grades tell a different story. Split and bonded leather, often sold under the catch-all label "genuine leather", come from the softer inner layers of the hide or from ground-down scrap adhered to a backing. Neither belongs on a strap that has to take load.
Faux leather is the other common shortcut in this category. It looks acceptable in photographs, but it does not mould to the body, does not soften with wear, and tends to split at the points where it folds most often.
Hardware Built to Last
Buckles, rivets and D-rings take as much stress as the leather itself, and they sit directly against skin for the whole time a harness is worn.
Ours are solid metal throughout. The D-rings give you secure attachment points for reins or a lead, and the buckles allow adjustment in both directions rather than locking you to a single fixed position. Every fitting is riveted and stitched into the strap rather than relying on adhesive.
If you have sensitive skin or a known metal allergy, message us before ordering and we will confirm the exact specification for you.
Made to Your Measurements, Not a Size Chart
There is no small, medium or large here. Once you order, we contact you for your measurements and cut the harness to them.
You will be asked for:
Chest, around the fullest part, taken under the arms with the tape level all the way round
Underbust, directly beneath the ribcage
Waist, at the natural waist rather than the trouser line
Shoulder to waist, front and back
Take these over whatever you plan to wear underneath, keeping the tape snug but not compressed. Having someone else measure is more accurate than doing it yourself, since self-measuring the chest and back tends to read small.
Because the harness is built to you, the buckles arrive sitting roughly mid-way through their adjustment range. That leaves room to tighten or loosen as needed, and it means no strap lands somewhere it should not.
How It Should Fit
A correctly fitted harness sits close to the body without pressing into it. You should be able to slide a flat hand under any strap comfortably.
Full-grain leather is firm when it arrives and relaxes over the first several wears as it moulds to your shape, then stabilises. This is normal and it is why we set the buckles mid-range rather than at the last hole. If anything feels tight around the ribs or restricts a full breath, loosen it. Comfort and safety are the same thing here.
Wear It With
The harness works as a standalone piece or as the foundation of a fuller set. It pairs naturally with a bridle or head harness, a collar, a tail fitting, or cuffs and restraints from our wider range. Because everything is made in the same workshop from the same leather, the colour and finish match across pieces, which is rarely true when you buy from several different sellers.

Caring for Your Harness
Leather care is mostly about doing less, not more.
Wipe the surface with a barely damp cloth and let it dry naturally at room temperature. Keep it away from radiators, hairdryers and direct heat, because forced drying pulls moisture out of the fibres and leads to stiffness and cracking. Store it hanging or laid flat in a breathable cotton bag rather than sealed in plastic.
Condition roughly twice a year, or simply when the leather begins to feel dry. Apply a small amount to a cloth first rather than directly onto the leather, which prevents a dark concentrated patch forming. Over-conditioning is a more common mistake than under-conditioning, since too much softens the leather past the point where it holds its structure.
Wipe the metal fittings dry after use. Sweat is corrosive, and salt residue left sitting in a buckle tongue is what eventually seizes it.
