A leather restraint belt is a heavy waist belt with a steel D-ring at the front. The officer buckles it at the detainee's back and locks the handcuffs to the ring. Hands stay in front and in view during transport, without the strain of cuffing behind the back.

This belt is cut from full-grain oiled leather, 12/13 oz and fits waists from 28 to 48 inch in the Standard size. It comes in [brown and black] with a steel roller buckle and a welded steel D-ring.

Key Features

  • Front D-ring. The ring holds the chain or hinge of the handcuffs at the front of the waist. Officers can see the hands for the whole move.

  • Buckle at the back. The roller buckle sits behind the detainee, out of reach of cuffed hands.

  • Padlock holes. Holes near the buckle take a padlock for higher-risk transports.

  • Wide leather band. At 1.5 in wide, the belt spreads pressure across the waist instead of one narrow line.

  • Two size ranges. Standard and Extra Large cover waists from 28 to 68 in between them.

How to Use

Follow your agency's policy and training for every restraint. These steps show how this belt goes on.

  1. Wrap the belt around the detainee's waist over their clothing, D-ring at the front and buckle at the back.

  2. Pull it snug at the natural waist and fasten the roller buckle. Tuck the tail through the keeper.

  3. Pass the handcuff chain or hinge through the D-ring, then cuff each wrist.

  4. Double-lock the cuffs.

  5. Check the belt sits at the waist. It should not ride up to the chest or slide down to the hips.

To take it off, remove the cuffs first, then open the buckle. For photos of each step, see How to Fit a Transport Belt.

Sizing and Fit

Measure around the waist over the clothes the person will wear, at the height the belt will sit. Pick the size whose range puts that number near the middle, so the buckle has spare holes on both sides.

New full-grain leather is stiff for the first few wears. It softens and shapes to the waist with use, so a snug fit on day one is normal. The full chart is in our Restraint Belt Sizing FAQ.

Care and Cleaning

Wipe the belt after each use with a cloth, mild soap and warm water. Let it air dry away from heaters. Leather soaks up fluids more than nylon, so follow your facility's disinfection policy after any contact with body fluids.

Once dry, rub in a thin coat of leather conditioner such as neatsfoot oil to keep the leather from cracking. Store it in a dry place to prevent mildew.

Before each shift, check the stitching, rivets, buckle and the weld on the D-ring. Replace the belt if the leather cracks, a hole tears or the ring bends. More tips are in our Leather Restraint Care guide.

Why Choose This Leather Restraint Belt

Leather keeps its shape and stands up to years of daily transports. Nylon belts weigh less, cost less and wipe clean faster. If your team moves detainees every day and wants one belt to last, leather is the better fit. Our Leather vs Nylon Transport Belt page sets out the trade-offs side by side.

We list the ring size, both waist ranges and the leather weight on this page, so you can check cuff fit and sizing before you order. Add your real policies here: shipping time, returns, bulk or agency pricing.
